HomeGoods Distribution Center
The popular national home furnishings retailer, HomeGoods, hired Layton Construction to build a large distribution center in Tucson, Arizona. The 109-acre site features a 900,000-square-foot concrete tilt-up distribution facility with a unique building configuration: three buildings in one.
The western portion of the building consists of three shipping wings with a total of 216 truck dock positions for outbound furniture. The center section of the building, referred to as the low-bay, maintains a clear height of 32 feet. The low-bay section of the building has a total of 77 truck dock positions for inbound furniture. The eastern portion of the building, referred to as the high-bay, maintains 47-foot clear height and contains the narrow-aisle racking with a super flat floor for inventory. The building also houses an office area of approximately 32,000 SF.
Due to the size of the project and the aggressive schedule, the team contracted with more than one subcontractor in some of the trades to attract and allow the local subcontractor community the opportunity to be a part of its success. This required a proactive approach to the schedule and production tracking of each of the subcontractors on site. Managing the production of a 900,000-square-foot facility required daily and, sometimes, hourly production tracking to maintain the schedule. This also provided a healthy competitive environment among the subcontractors—each providing the best in quality and speed.
