Newspaper Agency Corporation
The Newspaper Agency Corporation (NAC) is the publisher of the western regional New York Times and Utah’s two major papers, The Salt Lake Tribune and The Deseret Morning News. Moving from separate, outdated offices, the NAC building now houses the editorial staff for both newspapers, as well as a state-of-the-art production area—spanning a 37-acre site.
The cornerstone of this facility is the 240,000-square-foot press hall and distribution area. At 90 feet high, the press hall features a suspended, superflat slab press table with ff60 tolerances on both the top and bottom and less than 1/8″ of variation along the 420-foot surface. This part of the project also included placing the state-of-the-art German presses.
The exterior of the building—comprised primarily of metal paneling—features unique coloring designed to reflect the surrounding mountains. A 600-foot radiused architectural concrete wall, mimicked on the second-floor suspended slab and in an exterior retaining wall, is visible both inside and outside the newspapers’ editorial offices.
The press hall incorporates the sky blue, olive, and tan color theme while the administrative offices use multi-colored split face block, glass, and painting in a four-foot on center grid pattern. Architectural concrete screen walls isolate the work areas of the facility from public view and conceal the inbound and outbound delivery truck. The production area of the building also contains 95,000 square feet of superflat slab on grade concrete in the mailroom to support the many pieces of post-press production equipment, including inserters, collators, stackers, conveyors, and strappers.
