Provo Airport Terminal Expansion Phase 2
One of the fastest-growing commercial airports in the nation, Provo Airport has experienced surging passenger demand and competition from airlines for more flights out of Utah Valley. To address this demand, the Airport engaged Layton to deliver the first three phases of a large-scale airport expansion project, starting with the construction of the initial replacement terminal in 2022.
The recently completed second phase comprised a 32,536-square-foot, two-story expansion that enlarges the terminal’s ticketing and passenger queuing areas and adds space for outgoing baggage handling and distribution.
The project combines new construction with interior renovation of the operating terminal, reconfiguring the existing baggage system and installing new baggage conveyors to streamline outbound distribution. The scope also includes enlarged TSA screening areas to improve efficiency and reduce wait times, new office space for airport tenants and TSA personnel, expanded concessions, and a reconfigured inbound baggage system. Site improvements include a strategically relocated rental car parking lot for passenger convenience.
Every square foot of this work was built inside and tied into a fully operational commercial airport. The phased construction required temporary walls that extend or shorten the terminal’s sterile and secure areas as work progressed, and the team had to meet strict TSA guidelines and testing for working in that environment. Layton coordinated daily with airport operations to keep passengers, employees, and trade partners safe and flights running without interruption.
Layton is currently engaged in delivering Phase III — the North Concourse Addition — that will ultimately grow the airport to ten gates.
