The Dock

This mission criticalGo to project to create ‘The Dock’ is the most challenging new build construction project Structure Tone UK has ever undertaken.

This highly complex critical engineering project comprised the construction of a new five storey 62,000 sqft External Utilities Building, known colloquially as ‘The Dock’ to expand and enhance the engineering resilience to the client’s existing data centre.

The new building is located over a former graving dry dock adjacent to the Thames, supported on over 150 piles, with each pile location within the dock footprint requiring coring through the granite dock base – which was up to 3 metres thick. We poured almost 3,500 cubic metres of reinforced concrete and the floor slabs were cast at 650mm thick to support the new critical engineering services.

Twin high level link bridges connect The Dock to the Docklands Technical Centre and provide both services routes and personnel access.

The new engineering services included; twin 132kV UKPN transformers, radiators and MV switch gear, client switchgear, BMS and ComAp controls, new generator switchboards and control panels and four new HV generator sets weighing 90 tonnes each.

We undertook extensive critical engineering works within the live data centre, including HV cabling, new generator control panels, conversion of a fireman’s lift into a 10 storey services riser and the removal of three redundant generators, switchgear and radiators through the façade at 9th floor level.

This was an extremely challenging project that stands as a testament to the hard work and dedication of all involved.
