Texas State Capitol
Recognized as one of the most distinguished and largest state capitols, the historic 100-year-old Texas State Capitol underwent a massive renovation, restoring it to its original state of grandeur. The exterior preservation and grounds restoration of the landmark building is one of the most prestigious projects completed by our firm.
The 360,000sf project was managed by the State Preservation Board, an entity created by the Governor of Texas for the total preservation of the State Capitol Building and Annex.
A facelift to preserve the Historic Landmark
Scaffolding was erected over the entire building to begin the exterior preservation and repairs, including the dome, roof and skylights; granite, mortar and architectural detailing; original windows and doors; and historic lanterns.
The 360,000sf renaissance revival building, characterized by rounded arches and symmetrical composition, posed many challenges to the team—most notably, maintaining the integrity of the historic landmark. We restored and replaced all of the cast iron architectural features including columns, column capitals and ornamentation throughout the dome. We removed all existing paint on the dome and applied new paint. All finishes were carefully restored to match historic photographs and documents.
