SMBC Together Academy
Structure Tone Dublin is proud to have delivered the fitout for Together Academy’s new home in SMBC’s landmark building at 28 Fitzwilliam Street. This unique space has been purpose-designed to support the charity’s inspiring mission: to provide young adults with Down syndrome with certified training, practical work experience, and a pathway to paid employment.
About Together Academy
Together Academy is a pioneering social enterprise that blends education and employment opportunities to empower young people with Down syndrome. Founded by Therese Coveney and Cathy Smith, the organisation addresses a critical gap in Ireland, where nearly 90% of adults with Down syndrome are unemployed. Through partnerships with bodies like the Down Syndrome Centre and QQI, Together Academy offers:
- A 2-year QQI Level 3 programme in culinary and employability skills
- A 20-week vocational training course focused on job readiness
- Work placements in their award-winning Together Café and other inclusive businesses
- Tailored supports from occupational therapists and mentors
This new facility at Fitzwilliam Street allows Together Academy to scale their impact and offer a more immersive, structured learning environment.
Project Highlights
Ground Floor – Full-Service Café
At the heart of the project is a fully functioning café, open to the public and run by Together Academy trainees. This vibrant hospitality space provides an authentic workplace setting where students gain real-world experience in food preparation, customer service, and teamwork. The café is not just a training space—it is also a platform for visibility, inclusion, and connection within the wider community.
Lower Ground – Learning & Training Hub
The lower floor of the premises has been transformed into a modern, multi-functional educational facility. Key features include:
- Dedicated classroom spaces for employability and life skills training
- Desk and breakout areas for independent study and group work
- A fully equipped training kitchen for hands-on culinary practice
- Private meeting rooms supporting one-to-one mentoring and therapy sessions
The design prioritised accessibility, inclusivity, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere—making the space not only practical but also empowering.
A Fitout With Purpose
Structure Tone Dublin worked closely with Together Academy and the design team to ensure every detail of the project supported its educational and social aims. The result is a flexible, inspiring space that nurtures skill-building, independence, and confidence in its participants.
This fitout project is more than just bricks and mortar—it is a vital investment in people, opportunity, and future possibilities.
