When Signify, the world leader in lighting, relocated its North American headquarters in New Jersey, the company set out to create a workplace that showcases the power of light to support health, well‑being, and sustainability. Partnering with Gensler through a design‑build approach, Structure Tone collaborated closely with Signify and trade partners to deliver an immersive environment that integrates cutting‑edge lighting technologies, including products still in development, while serving as a real‑world testing ground for innovation.
Sustainability was central to the project, aligning with Signify’s commitment to responsible design and carbon‑neutral operations. The team emphasized reuse and efficiency throughout, repurposing furniture and office fronts from the previous space to reduce material waste. Energy‑efficient, connected LED lighting and sensors were incorporated to optimize performance, alongside the NatureConnect biophilic lighting system, which simulates natural daylight to support occupant comfort and well‑being. Additional sustainable features included UV‑C upper‑air disinfection lighting, recyclable and 3D‑printed lighting fixtures, and a comprehensive approach to material reuse—reinforcing the project’s focus on environmental responsibility without compromising functionality or design intent.
Midway through construction, the COVID‑19 pandemic prompted a reassessment of workplace needs. The design was refined to support collaboration, flexibility, and wellness, featuring adaptable meeting areas, huddle spaces, and occupancy management enabled through Signify’s Interact connected lighting platform. Despite global supply chain challenges, proactive coordination and agility allowed the team to deliver the project under budget and in time for its opening—providing Signify with a future‑ready headquarters that inspires employees and brings its purpose to life.
