Structure Tone continually seeks to partner with leading medical and pharmaceutical institutions to advance the fight against today’s new and ongoing health risks. When Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed), needed to upgrade and expand, we were their premier construction partner.
Located on the active 200-acre campus in San Antonio, we built-out the BSL-3 Laboratory in Texas Biomed’s JRD Building 27. First, our team reviewed and analyzed the existing structure and provided constructability reviews for the planned construction. Demolition of existing laboratory finishes allowed our team access to the overhead MEP systems. Extensive MEP work was completed, including the installation of an HVAC system that provides real-time negative air pressure throughout the facility when doors are opened and closed. This system was built in a 4,000sf penthouse located directly above the laboratory. Relocation of an existing boiler into a new boiler room provided much needed cost savings.
Once completed, the facility included three new labs, 39 specimen storage rooms, and a large cleaning and sterilization facility. The boiler room and cold storage were centrally located within the facility. Additionally, new restroom/locker room facilities, offices, and storage areas were constructed including a staircase at the mechanical penthouse level above the level 1 lab area.
In addition to adhering to BSL-3 specifications, our team consistently coordinated with all project team members to ensure quality and safety throughout the project.
