Catholic Health, Mercy Hospital Emergency Department Expansion
LF Driscoll Healthcare partnered with Catholic to expand Mercy Hospital’s Emergency Department, serving communities in eastern New York City and western Nassau County. This collaboration marked the first partnership between the two organizations and delivered a state-of-the-art transformation for the hospital’s emergency services.
The six-phase project, executed as a combined effort, was successfully completed with three phases achieving Zero-in-Place Defects through LF Driscoll Healthcare’s punchlist program. The field team collaborated closely with the design team and trade partners to ensure a high-quality final product. The transformation of the Emergency Department marked a significant milestone for Catholic Health and its dedicated emergency team.
At the outset, the project was intended to be completed in nine phases across two projects. Out of these, three phases required filing NYS Department of Health, while the other six focused on cosmetic upgrades. However, during the planning stage, we identified potential delays due to long lead times for certain materials. To counteract this, the field team meticulously restructured the phasing plan to maintain project momentum, allowing adequate time for the availability of critical items. Collaborating with architects and engineers, the team identified alternate solutions, such as light fixtures, wall protections, and mechanical equipment, to ensure timely completion without compromising quality.
Our team also developed a targeted list of bidders comprised of Long Island contractors who have experience working with Catholic Health in active healthcare environments. We created detailed trade scopes, including phasing plans, overall schedules, and micro-schedules to ensure full transparency for both trade partners and the client.
Effective communication was essential for keeping the project on track. From the beginning, we established an open dialogue with the design team, allowing for prompt reviews of submittals and RFIs. Daily subcontractor meetings, led by the field superintendent addressed next steps, logistical challenges, and manpower allocation, ensuring seamless execution and adherence to the schedule.
This project exemplified LF Driscoll Healthcare’s commitment to quality, efficiency, and collaboration, culminating in a successful expansion of Mercy Hospital’s Emergency Department.
