Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Roberts Children’s Health
Our firm has partnered with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for over 40 years, supporting the expansion and improvement of their University City Campus. We are currently working alongside our joint venture partner, DPR Construction, the design team, and key trade subcontractors, to deliver a new 1.3-million-square-foot patient tower. This 27-story tower, located at the heart of CHOP’s campus will seamlessly connect to the existing main hospital.
Building on an active healthcare campus—adjacent to other CHOP buildings, the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and Penn Medicine facilities—demanded meticulous planning and execution. The initial phase included enabling work to reroute and back-feedback-feeding utilities passing through the construction site, ensuring uninterrupted operations at the main hospital. The next phase encompassed the demolition and reconstruction of an underground parking garage abutting two active healthcare buildings and three operational research facilities, including vivarium research spaces. Following the garage’s completion, the Wood Ambulatory Care Building was demolished, paving the way for the new tower’s construction.
Throughout the project, the safety of patients, staff, trade workers, and visitors—as well as the continuity of hospital and research operations—remains our top priority. Comprehensive mitigation measures, developed in collaboration with a noise and vibration consultant, are put in place to minimize disruptions to sensitive surrounding spaces. Additionally, detailed vehicular and pedestrian traffic management plans are regularly updated and communicated to reduce the impact on those navigating University City.
