Beacon Hospital
The Beacon Hospital Group awarded Structure Tone the fifth floor new bed ward project in September 2019. The project involved the complete demolition of the existing laboratory, file stores, and doctors’ rooms before new construction could begin.
The new layout provides the hospital with 19 new beds arranged in five triple bedrooms and four private rooms. There is a nurses’ station, a meds room, ward pantry, and various storerooms. Some of the unique hospital elements included medical gases, bedhead trunking, and the nurse call system.
All of this work was carried out in a live hospital with the oncology department directly overhead, the urology department beside the site, and a fully occupied, 30-bed ward below. The project extends to 6,500sf and took 19 weeks to complete. The size of the project meant that careful planning was needed in terms of sequencing of work elements and siting of materials.
Highlights include:
- Partnering with the client and design team—Beacon Hospital Services Limited, TOT Architects, O’Byrne Jenkins and Homan O’Brien Engineering—to deliver an 11% increase in bed capacity to the hospital.
- Navigating the JCI Hospital Accreditation Audit during the construction phase.
- The Structure Tone project team as a whole were a huge factor in realizing the client’s and design team’s vision. It was a really positive team effort.
