Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children
Kapi’olani Medical Center is known for its tremendous care throughout Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. Prior to the completion of this facility, children needing inpatient medical care were treated in an outdated building from the 1950s. Children’s beds were simply separated by curtains, and newborns were placed in bassinets lining the walls, with no space for parents. In response to this major need for advancement and modernization, Layton completed the five-story Diamond Head Tower expansion to Hawaii’s only children’s hospital.
Construction for the master planned multi-year project included multi-phase construction in a tight urban site with no laydown during which, the facility-maintained operations. Layton also performed a complete seismic upgrade to these facilities.
The new Diamond Head Tower features 70 private neonatal ICU rooms and 26 private pediatric ICU rooms, providing space for parents and family, as research shows children recover faster surrounded by their family. Since opening, families have described the new facilities and ICU rooms as “life changing.”
The new five-level patient tower is home to the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. It includes the addition of more obstetric beds and updates to the dietary/nutrition space, multidisciplinary outpatient clinic, rehabilitation services department, women’s services area, and conference/education rooms. Layton also completed the new patient drop-off and pick-up, entry and plaza area.
Scope for this project also included major site work, the demolition of an old parking structure, and utility relocation.
