Tower Health Reading HealthPlex for Advanced Surgical & Patient Care
The Reading HealthPlex is a 476,000sf surgical and inpatient tower that includes six patient-care levels and consolidates campus-wide surgery into one building. With a mission of creating a positive patient experience, all 110,000sf of the hospital’s surgical services are co-located to streamline the patient treatment process from check-in to pre-admission testing to procedure.
The new tower’s surgical services include eight procedure rooms on the ground level and 24 operating rooms (ORs) on the lower level, six of which are hybrid-capable ORs. Constructed over a new operating room (OR) plinth, the tower houses 150 new private patient rooms with smart room technology and a second helipad. The Emergency Department (ED) is equipped with the latest in cardiac monitoring, invasive blood pressure monitoring, respiratory monitoring, and a state-of-the-art CAT scanner, making it one of the most technologically advanced and sophisticated surgical centers in the region. The building’s mechanical and electrical systems utilize leading-edge technology and include 25 all-aluminum construction air handlers with energy recover wheels. The facility also now features new generators and 100% redundant emergency power.
Incorporating the latest research on healing and stress reduction in hospitals, the new HealthPlex includes a vast network of green spaces accessible to patients, visitors, and staff. A private garden in the surgical waiting room, skylights in pre-op areas, and an 88,000sf green roof provide patients with a healing environment. The massive green roof also serves to visually minimize the large footprint.
Our team successfully navigated the complexities of a tight, urban site in a continuously operating urban medical center to deliver this project on schedule and on budget while maintaining a safe and functional environment for medical staff, patients, visitors, and the community.
