Best Hall at Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ
As the newest residence hall on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University, BEST Hall has become a sought-after living space for the university’s science and engineering students.
Our Pavarini McGovern team provided owners representative services during preconstruction and construction of the 153,000sf, 500-bed hall, which includes three 50,000sf individual dormitory buildings, a large central courtyard and a mechanical convertor building. The dormitories achieved LEED® Silver certification.
The biggest challenge from a management perspective was the daunting schedule. The team had 20 months to get the work done, including the design phases. To meet this extremely aggressive timetable, our team worked with the university and the architect to maintain strict deliverable dates. From reviewing all 450-plus construction documents and guiding the bidding process to managing change orders and providing daily status updates to Rutgers staff, we carefully managed the project through all phases to make sure it was built on time and within the budget the university planned for.
Our regular updates, plus weekly project meetings with Rutgers’ housing staff, allowed us to make sure that each deliverable was met along the way and long-lead items, such as furniture, were in sync with the project schedule. As the project was in its final stages, our team helped manage the close-out and punchlist processes as well as the final occupancy by the students.
