Eir Drogheda
The Drogheda Exchange Data Centre Upgrade represents a critical investment in Ireland’s national digital infrastructure. Commissioned by Eir, this 2.5 MW brownfield redevelopment transforms an existing telecommunications exchange in Drogheda, County Louth into a modern, resilient data centre, while maintaining the uninterrupted operation of a live facility.
Delivered within the highly constrained environment of an operational exchange, the project demanded meticulous planning and phased execution. Selective demolition and construction works were carefully sequenced to protect critical live assets and ensure business continuity at all times. The redevelopment includes the construction of a new high-performance data hall, designed to meet the growing demand for secure, low-latency data storage and processing while supporting Eir’s long-term network resilience and disaster recovery objectives.
The upgraded facility accommodates 135 IT racks supported by 36 in-row cooling units, delivering efficient and resilient thermal management. A new external chiller yard, robust chilled water systems, and advanced controls contribute to improved energy efficiency and operational reliability. The power infrastructure has been significantly enhanced through the installation of UPS systems, LV/MV distribution, comprehensive power monitoring, and two standby generators with roof-mounted remote radiators, supported by bulk fuel storage and compliant containment and refuelling systems.
Security, safety, and compliance were central to the design. The project integrates data-centre-appropriate fire detection and suppression systems alongside advanced access control and CCTV, ensuring both asset protection and regulatory alignment. Comprehensive testing, commissioning, and handover processes were embedded into the programme to guarantee performance, resilience, and operational readiness from day one.
The Drogheda Exchange upgrade exemplifies Eir’s commitment to future-proofing Ireland’s digital backbone. By combining resilient design, efficient systems, and careful delivery within a live national exchange, the project delivers a secure, scalable, and energy-conscious data centre capable of supporting Ireland’s evolving connectivity and cloud infrastructure needs for years to come.
