Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts
The 469,000sf Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, located on the Avenue of the Arts at Broad and Spruce Streets in Philadelphia, PA provides the city with both a concert hall and a multiuse theater. Encompassing the Verizon Hall and Perelman Theater is a four-story, 140,000sf glass and steel barrel vault roof that sits atop the cantilevered floor decks of the fourth level of the building. Unique are the 12,000sf glass curtain walls at each end, made up of more than 500 panes of glass, each pane measuring 22sf.
A turntable stage transforms the 27,000sf Perelman Recital Hall into a theater seating 650 people that is used by the American Theater Art for Youth, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Concerto Soloists, Philadanco, and others. Also available is the 150-seat SEI Innovation Studio.
The 101,000sf, cello-shaped, state-of-the-art Verizon concert hall is home to the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra. With interior surfaces covered in mahogany, the 2,500 seat, four-level, hall features live performances and has the ability to broadcast and record. A series of adjustable reverberation chambers, wooden doors, canopies, and banners, permit the optimization of the hall’s acoustics for different instruments and vocals. Physically isolated from the surrounding building and consisting of vibration-dampening mechanical systems, the center delivers the lowest possible noise level count of N-1.
