SUNY Purchase Humanities Building, Purchase, NY
Constructed in 1973, the Humanities Building on the SUNY Purchase campus had not had any major renovations since then. With new requirements for health and safety, ADA compliance and energy efficiency – plus new ways of thinking about productive learning environments – the building needed some major upgrades. Pavarini McGovern stepped in to help, managing the renovations to the 92,530sf space.
The first order of business was bringing the building up to current codes and standards. All interior finishes and systems were completely gutted and renovated with new walls, ceilings, MEP systems, elevators, telecommunications systems, and restrooms. During this process, the team also removed and disposed of the hazardous materials that remained from the original 1970s construction.
In addition to bringing the building up to speed when it comes to code compliance, the renovations also improve the student and faculty experience, providing a much more modern place to learn and teach. The redesign, led by Kliment Halsband Architects, included more than 40 new classrooms, reorganized corridors, a refurbished theater, and a new journalism center, which features a news room, broadcast studio, and control room.
The new and approved building is now fully ADA accessible and is even targeting LEED® Silver certification.
