Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital Pavilion Expansion and Emergency Department Renovation
Building on our successful relationship with the team at Chester County Hospital (CCH) after completing the Lasko Tower Expansion, we worked with CCH and Penn Medicine to implement the largest expansion in the Hospital’s history — adding 250,000 sf of new space and renovating 26,000 sf of existing Emergency Department. The expansion includes a new hospital entrance with lobby amenities. It also doubled the Emergency Department, added high tech operating rooms for cardiac catherization/open heart, a hybrid OR, created new areas for non-invasive cardiology and a 99 single bed inpatient tower.
Building on an active hospital campus creates numerous logistical challenges. Patient care and the continuation of all hospital operations was at the forefront of all project decisions. Our team worked closely with a multidisciplinary group that created a comprehensive strategy for each portion of the work. We then coordinated with hospital staff to ensure everyone was ready and the appropriate safety measures were in place. For example, not only the immediate construction area that was considered, but each corridor and room that bordered the area – above, below, and adjacent to was also evaluated so traffic patterns were ironed out in advance, dust, and vibration controls were implemented, and individual Infection Control Risk Assessments were created for each location.
We took great care to verify that all elements that were selected during design would ultimately perform as anticipated by creating on-site performance and aesthetic mock-ups before we constructed the entire project. In this case we built a two-story shell on the interior-exterior elements – the façade materials, the windows, the wall closure techniques, disinfection techniques, etc., were all tested to ensure everything would perform as expected.
By working in partnership with hospital staff, equipment vendors and project team members to identify and manage as many issues as possible in advance, we created a safe atmosphere and reduced the impact that a major expansion created for construction professionals, hospital staff, patients, and visitors.
