University of Hawaii at Manoa Life Sciences Building
In collaboration with architect G70, Layton Construction led a design-build project for the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Life Sciences Building. The process began with a demolition of the university’s existing structure, Henke Hall, and the removal and replacement of contaminated soil for the new facility. Through BIM 360 Field Software, the Layton team identified, tracked, and backchecked all field issues during the construction process. The new Life Sciences Building features structural steel framing with SidePlate moment frames for an open and easily reconfigurable floor plan. The project included additional elements such as high-performance and high-visibility curtain wall systems with aluminum composite metal panels. An exposed structural steel framing was included to create a modernized industrial finish that spotlights remarkable views of the blue skies and tropical landscaping on the reflective exterior. The team added the open floor plans with several windows inside the building to create a bright and airy space for studying and research.
