Columbia University, The Campbell Sports Center
Pavarini McGovern managed the construction of the new 50,000sf Campbell Sports Center, the gateway to the Baker Field Athletic Complex of Columbia University. The new facility includes:
• 120-person auditorium
• 6,000sf strength and conditioning center
• Team rooms
• Coaches’ offices
• Meeting and conference rooms
• Student-athlete lounge area
• Study area
The project attained LEED® Gold certification, and it was the first significant project undertaken by the university utilizing BIM, which will be used to manage and maintain the facility.
During the preconstruction phase, we focused on sharing our logistics, safety planning with all stakeholders, because the center is located in a busy and densely populated residential neighborhood, as well as being an active athletic complex. Additionally, because the new sports complex was such a vital component of Columbia’s long-term vision, we had regular meetings with:
• University trustees
• Campaign Leadership Committee
• Director of athletics and physical education
• Community boards
The façade was the most challenging aspect of the project, encompassing:
• Aluminum panel rain screen system
• Metal stud framing with exterior DensGlass sheathing
• Hand sanded/anodized aluminum panel
• Steel framed glass curtainwall
We worked with Columbia to identify opportunities for minority, women and locally owned businesses, securing a total M/W/L participation of 50 percent, which exceeded the University’s M/W/LBE participation goals by 15 percent. Columbia’s program also stipulated that 40 percent of the total project labor force be comprised of M/W/L, itemized by 35 percent of M/LBEs and 5 percent of WBE.
